Welcome to Helpful for Homes, the premier source on the web for information, tips, and reviews on all things needed to make a home run smoothly and beautifully!

Some years ago, a few friends were enjoying dinner together at someone’s home when the hosts shared that their dishwasher had recently stopped working and they were unsure which brand to buy.

The group began discussing the merits of different brands of dishwashers, with each person sharing their own experiences. The conversation naturally progressed to how difficult it is to find high-quality unbiased reviews and information on the internet.

The idea for Helpful for Homes was born.

Here at Helpful for Homes, we have a specific mission: provide authoritative information about how to run a home. Then, convey that information in a way that’s easily digestible.

We cover a dizzying array of topics, going deeply into your home to cover topics like insulation and HVAC, then pivoting to cover fun stuff like decorating ideas.

A home is a complex ecosystem. The complexity begins before you even buy the home. Honestly, it begins when you first begin shopping for homes. Considerations like home warranties, inspection reports, and homeowners insurance become suddenly important.

Once all of the important and practical stuff is taken care of, you have to dig into other layers. You suddenly need to become well-versed in different types of flooring and insulation. Then, you have to become an overnight expert on taking care of hardwood floors, for example or learn the best vacuum cleaners for different types of carpet.

Oh, and exactly what kind of power washer do you need to wash those tall windows?

Homeownership is complicated.

After all of the other stuff is taken care of, you’re able to focus on the fun stuff: decorating. But that becomes complicated, too. Who knew there were so many different kinds of paint?

That’s where Helpful for Homes comes in. We want to be your go-to source on the web for everything you need to know about running a home, from A to Z.

We love hearing from our readers. If you have any questions or content recommendations, please drop a comment on one of our articles or send a private message to the team.

Meet the Team

Carmela Burch – Chief Editor

Carmela Burch bio picture

My name is Carmela Burch and I’m the Chief Editor for Helpful for Homes.

I always knew I wanted to be a writer, and growing up, I thought I’d write the Great American Novel. However, as I got into high school and college, my passion for house and home topics grew until I knew I wanted to write informatively about how to make a home run efficiently.

I started here at Helpful for Homes as a writer, and have worked my way up to Chief Editor. I still love digging into the fun research and writing of some of our guides, and being able to edit the other content that comes across my desk from this team is a pure pleasure.

When I’m not working, I’m volunteering at my local animal shelter, which I helped redesign last year. You can reach me at cburch@helpfulforhomes.com with your comments, questions and concerns.

Miranda Pate – Junior Editor

Miranda Pate bio picture

I’m Miranda Pate and I’m the Junior Editor here at Helpful for Homes.

This is my first job out of college, and it’s been a great place to learn about this industry and about writing and editing in general.

I grew up in a single-parent household, and I helped my mom a lot with stuff around the house. I guess you could say it just came naturally to me. When we write about topics like “Tips for Buying a Vacuum Cleaner,” I am cognizant of the fact that someone out there is reading this and making a major financial decision based on what they read on our site. The work we do is important and I take it seriously.

I spend my free time enjoying the outdoors and soaking up that good healthy sunshine whenever possible. You can reach me at mpate@helpfulforhomes.com

Garry Randall – Construction Specialist

Garry Randall bio picture

I’m Garry Randall, the Construction Specialist for Helpful for Homes.

After working for years as a general contractor and helping people remodel their homes, I found that I became proficient in the “how-to” aspect of home care and design. I began to enjoy the process of helping laypeople understand how to make their homes even better.

When I was approached to work for Helpful for Homes, I was absolutely delighted to come on board and help to make a difference here. I oversee many of the important guides we compile here and I believe that we make a difference.

In my spare time, I enjoy oil painting and learning more about art. If you have any questions, my email is grandall@helpfulforhomes.com

Isaac Larson – Appliance and Plumbing Specialist

Isaac Larson bio picture

My name is Isaac Larson and I’m the Appliance and Plumbing Specialist for Helpful for Homes.

When I graduated from high school, I went straight to work for my family’s plumbing and refrigeration business, where I became an expert at kitchen appliances. After running the business for some years, I decided to take my skills online. That’s how I ended up working for Helpful for Homes.

I enjoy my job here. It allows me to give guidance to people in the areas of home living that aren’t usually very glamorous: issues related to plumbing and appliances. Buying appliances and hiring plumbers are major expenses, and I hope that the tips we give help people to better spend their money.

When I’m not at work, I spend time with my family on our small farm. You can contact me at ilarson@helpfulforhomes.com
